fallenoutwithmyhead was asking about a non-Dial-A-Song-quality version of TMBG’s cover of “Concrete and Clay,” so I figured I would go ahead and post it! DIG.
BREAK OUT THE CIGARS
THIS LIFE IS FOR SQUIRRRRRRRRRRRRELS
STILL THE VERY BEST
So today something made me think of “The Joker” and unfortunately Wikipedia basically ruined the original for me—I was all “WHY DOES SPEAKING OF THE POMPATUS OF LOVE MAKE PEOPLE CALL YOU MAURICE AND ALSO WHAT THE FUCK DOES ‘POMPATUS’ EVEN MEAN” but “Maurice” is just a ref to some earlier Steve Miller songs and “POMPTAUS” DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING AT ALL, and like that’s not enough the terrible/amazing “Really love your peaches wanna shake your tree” line is just ripped off from another song. I’M SO DISILLUSIONED.
Um anyway I guess I’m getting a bit OT here but THE POINT IS it reminded me of the TMBG version which is even more amazing than I remembered. It’s hard to decide between the voice Flans is doing and the amusingness of hearing John Linnell sing backup on “midnight toker” as the best part. Enjoy!
Sometimes at shows TMBG randomly plays “Theme from the Monkees,” which is very appropriate, because they are basically The Monkees. Here it is from 5/23/03, in Asbury Park.
by the way, TMBG covered Del Shannon’s “Runaway” and it’s really important
here is the request that valerie had! // “contrecoup” [tmbg cover]
i did this one on the slightly-out-of-tune autoharp (transposed way up to A) and messed up quite a few times!
